Seeking Local Bands, Musicians, DJ's & Performers for Mendocino Music Festival

Calling all local musicians, bands, performers and DJ's...

September 6, 2009
The Westival
Mendocino, CA

What is a westival you ask? It is a combination of a wedding and a music festival. Two people that love music as much as we do need a marriage celebration that is extraordinary, memorable, and of course showcases local music talent and performance. We are not looking for a wedding band. We are seeking musicians to play in an all day music festival that will be held the day after our wedding. We are also seeking performers, including hoopers, and poi or staff spinners to perform during the day.

We have rented a beautiful ranch near Mendocino as our blank canvas. The wedding itself will be held on Saturday, September 5. But on Sunday, September 6, we are opening up the ranch for a music and performance festival to celebrate local talent. The ranch is inland, so the weather will be sunny and warm.

We are seeking bands and DJ's who are willing to play on in amazingly beautiful natural setting, next to a lake, with travel, food, and lodging covered. We are paying for the whole event ourselves, so we are looking to the bay area music community to help us out and join in the celebration.

If you are interested in performing or know someone who is interested, send me a message.

Thanks everyone for reading!

-Lauren & Jon

Fuck Yeah! - Santa Cruz's weekly Wednesday get-down.

Santa Cruz has a new weekly! That's right. We're partying every Wednesday with resident DJs Cool Hand Luke and Sparkinzi at the Seabright Bar and Lounge. This place has seen some ups and downs over the past few years, but was bought by a new owner at the end of last year and he's dedicated to making the space friendly and inviting to all. We're bringing in some local favorites as well as notable names from the bay area and beyond.
Helping us kick off the first week is DJ Seek from Spaceship Gaia, Digg, and Sugar. The next week is Lil John on the 21st, then Chlorophil on the 28th, followed by the one and only Rick Preston on the 4th of February. More info, as well as updates on who is playing next can be found on the following page. FrigiDigits.net/fuckyeah

1. heather fung, san francisco police chief, heading SFPD including
using the mini golf cart style vehicles for crowd control and

Bassdrop
Thursday, August 14th 2008
Shine (1337 Mission @ 10th)
9:30pm until 2am

$5 (benefiting LoveFest)

It's been over a year since we started throwing these little Bassdrop events, and until now, we haven't charged for a single one of them. But this month we're asking for a measly $5, with all the profits going toward float fees & building costs for this years LoveFest event on October 4th. You know we love giving everyone free shit, but we hope that you can understand why we're charging for this one. Come see why RKidz has such an amazing reputation & help us pay for our float at the same time. You know you wanna......

Tonight!!! July 25th, Cool Hand Luke doing a 3 hour set at Fusion!

Alright, alright - are you ready? Tonight is a special three hour set before I go to Europe. We've had an amazing response to this and it looks like this one is gonna go off. The details: I will be starting my set at 10pm and going all the way until 1am at the Fusion Lounge at 110 Pearl Alley in Downtown Santa Cruz in between Walnut and Lincoln. This event is free, that's right - no cover. It is twenty one and up, so don't forget your ID. Also the same night is a shindig over at the 418 project - maybe check out both? I know Nanda is going to play and he is one of my favorite new DJs. Consider it a pre-party for the party in Harvey West tomorrow, or M-Pyre down in Monterey, but whatever you do, get on down there and come boogie!!! Oh yeah, and I'm serious about the ceramic Portuguese roosters.

DJ Jacie this Friday (14th) at Fusion Lounge Project

After only hearing House music a handful of times at the age of 23, she went to her only local DJ store and bought two turntables, a mixer, headphones and four records. Now, almost 10 years later, her passion and enthusiasm for the music is stronger than ever. She's frisky, vibrant, and authentic as gold. She comes with a rare flare that grabs you by the ya-ya's and refuses to let go until you have felt the vibration of truth in the center of your soul.

Her style- a unique and unpredictable tasty blend of west coast flavor, infused with a deep funk, and nasty sternum-throbbing basslines, layering deeper with every flip of the record.

Touted as "The Dr. Suess of Dj's," she is one of the west coast's best kept secrets. Sneaking out of Reno for a weekend on the coast-she makes her first Santa Cruz appearance with us on Friday, March 14th.
REN THE VINYL ARCHAEOLOGIST (True Skool)
90's Dance Set

San Francisco stalwart, (by way of NYC) Ren The Vinyl Archaeologist, has been holding it down for SF hip-hop culture since 2000. A great proponent of the four elements of hip hop, Ren in conjunction with his magazine/newsletter Trueskool, promotes events related to b-boying, emceeing, dj'ing, and the written word graffiti. Ren's persistence and dedication has earned him spots alongside greats such as: Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambaataa, Q-Bert, KRS-One, and Cut Chemist.

In terms of abilites, they don't call him The Vinyl Archaeologist for nothing! Ren is notorious for digging deep in the crates for uncanny surprises. Expect to hear some 90's dance tunes in the vein of: C+C, Technotronic, as well as some 80's heat such as: New Order, Man Parrish, Newcleus, Information Society, Rob Base + EZ Rock all mixed with his inimitable hip-hop flair.

So unlike me...

I've been dee-jay-ing and collecting records for over 20 years. I just started putting some of my mixes up at my website djphosh.com. These first few files are mixed rough & live. I've been out of the music scene for too long, now I'm back. I'll be posting all kinds of great music for down load at my site.

Thanks

All The Best

Phosh

I recently suffered an injury to my ear that left me 90% deaf in my right ear for over a week. It was one of the most frightening and frustrating experiences of my life. I thought I might never hear music the same. Fortunately, my hearing has been fully restored with no permanent damage at all. And to celebrate, I would like you all to come out and enjoy the truly amazing ability to hear the musical stylings of a couple of dustfish bass-slangers, NoMe and Me. We have been invited to grace the wheels of steel at Sol and Seven's bi-monthly party at Wish this Friday and I would love to see as many of you who have ever enjoyed dancing to our beat to come out and have another listen. It's free. Full details below.
www.frigidigits.net/mixes.htm
It's the mix on top called Mayday. As with all of my mixes, it was done in one take on two turntables without overdubs or edits.

Tracklist is as follows...
King Sunny Ade - Ire
Team Shadetek - Yoga Riddim
James Brown - Funky Drummer (Bonus Beat reprise)

Bring Hip House Back

Bring Hip House Back

Village Voice

Hip-house is the first music I ever loved. In 1988, when I was nine years old, my family moved for a year from Baltimore to Twickenham, a suburb of London, so that my dad, a history professor, could work on a book about British army barracks that he never ended up finishing. I started paying attention to pop music maybe a week or two after landing there. In Baltimore, most of the kids I knew were pretty much oblivious to any pop culture that wasn't Nintendo or Transformers or the Orioles. In Twickenham, though, kids actually listened to the radio and bought records and rode their bikes outside; I guess Nintendo hadn't really penetrated the market there yet. And pop music suddenly became a whole lot easier to follow because of Top of the Pops, the weekly TV show that counted down the top 40 singles and had artists coming out to lip-sync on weird sci-fi stages with lots of scaffolding and dry ice. It was pretty easy to figure out what was lame (Simply Red, Rick Astley, Jason Donovan) and what wasn't (Poison, Roachford, S'Express). I wasn't really cognizant of the differences between musical genres; all I knew was that some stuff was slow and boring and some stuff was fast and bright and fun. And about half the tapes I spent my allowance on were hip-house compilations. I didn't know that rap was underground black music from the US that had begun crossing over to the mainstream a few years earlier back home and was just beginning to catch on in the UK. I didn't know that house music was this revolutionary electronic mutation of disco or that kids a few years older than me were gathering by the thousands in fields near my house so they could get high and dance to it. I didn't know that hip-house was a briefly popular combination of the two, that American rappers were jumping on the bandwagon and recording a song or two before it would fall out of fashion and get regularly clowned for years in magazines like ego trip. I didn't know that the stuff was huge in clubs back home in Baltimore, that it would eventually pick up a bunch of other influences and mutate into Baltimore club music. All I knew was that the best tapes at Woolworth were always the ones that said hip-house on the cover.

Anywhere to whoop it up on December 23rd? I usually go to the End up when I'm in town but its reggae nite that nite. So any suggestion for great house music without havin to dress to impress? Would be even more awesome if it had 2 rooms for a bit of variety like say a hip hop room?

Thanks a bunch and Happy Holidays!!

Hey!

My man and I are coming up to SF for Turkey Day and looking for some killer beats to dance our asses off to on Friday the 24th. Anyone know of something we could look up? We live in San Diego so don't know any good clubs etc. Sasha is playing at Ruby Skye but its $$ and we'd love something more underground.

Any ideas would help! Thanks and Happy Turkey Day!

howdy,

just wondering how folks found Love Fest ?

i didn't make it to the parade, but i cruised Civic Center for a while... there was an interesting mix of music, but i do find it hard to dance when people are constantly moving through the dancefloor.

found some good music at the Rock It Science stage so i camped there for a long time just before sunset.

i know that there was going to be a good party that night at the Gingerbread House - did anyone make it? i got pulled off to a sex party instead :-)

HOUSE and UK Garage party @ Cellar this Saturday!

Hey all~

This is my first of hopefully many great nights to come at my new venue, The Cellar. We just renovated the house room and it is absolutely gorgeous, so what better way to kick it off than with a HUGE party! The promo stuff being done for this night has been huge, and we are expecting a great turnout of SF residents in the know. Email me at rsvp@cellarsf.com to be put on the guestlist!! Here's the SFStation writeup:

Come to the first installment of Housecleaning, the city's only danceclub event that truly offers something for everyone. This kickoff event will feature an interesting fusion of funky and progressive house Voda DJs Vedda and Martin Aquino (in the newly renovated side room), and SF Bay Area's top hip hop/grime DJs, the B.I.G. crew, in the main room. Grab those trendy friends, AND the ones who just like to shake their booty, and head down to The Cellar for one insane night of DJs and dancing!

10pm - 2am
$10 cover, or email me to get put on a guestlist for free entry before 1am
21+

The Cellar
685 Sutter St. (@ Taylor)
SF, CA 94102

Thanks for reading!

State of House Music in the Bay?

Hey guys,

I just wanted to stimulate a bit of discussion. How do you guys feel about the music you are hearing being played by bay area house dj's? Do you like the music being made by Bay Area producers, and if so then whom? What are your favorite spots to go dancing?

Personally, I like more of a funky, chicago sound than most of what I hear out and about. At the moment, Mark Farina and Andrew Phelan are 2 of my favorite Bay Area producers. I also like Vincent Kwok and MFR (I am pretty sure they are local?)

I always prefer dancing at underground parties to clubs, but I do like some of the talent that endup has brought of late (i.e. Derrick Carter, DJ Sneak, Honey Dijon.) Pink is a spot where I tend to have a lot of fun as well, both at Green Gorilla's night on Wednesdays and at Bionic on Sundays.

Hope everyone is staying dry and finding some sick beats to shake it to this weekend!

Ez,
Eric Sharp

need DJ May 9th in Berkeley

Hi all!

I need a house DJ - fun, funky and maybe electroy techy but not dark techy - for a
party on May 9th in Berkeley. The music needs to appeal to a mainstream crowd but still be good dance music. It's a fundraiser for a conservation biology center in Uganda and they'd be playing from about 9-11pm at Blake's on Telegraph for $200, preferably with their
own equipment. Ideally you/he/she have some afrobeat and/or afrofunk to throw in there.

Let me know if you are interested and available or if you know anyone who could do it. You can contact me on tribe or at sarah.boyd at gmail

Thanks!!

Dance Music Then and Now, From Tom Moulton and Unai

April 20, 2006
Critic's Notebook

Dance Music Then and Now, From Tom Moulton and Unai

By KELEFA SANNEH

Early in the 1970's, Tom Moulton found a way to defy the laws of mathematics: he made songs longer by a process of subtraction. By stretching out the emptiest parts of his favorite records the rhythmic breaks, where verses and choruses gave way to beats and grooves he helped turn R&B hits like "Do It ('Til You're Satisfied)" into disco classics. His hugely influential mixes are collected on a great new double-CD compilation called "A Tom Moulton Mix" (Soul Jazz); in it, you can hear the birth of modern dance music.

Dance-music producers have been subtracting ever since, finding out that less music can often move dancers more. You can hear decades' worth of subtracting when you play "A Love Moderne" (Forcetracks), a skeletal but surprisingly seductive new CD by the Swedish producer known as Unai. It's an early contender for electronic-music album of the year, and it makes Mr. Moulton's work sound positively baroque.

In 1974, Mr. Moulton did something that would soon become commonplace: he made a mix. He spent 80 hours turning some club-friendly records into a 45-minute reel-to-reel tape, which eventually became a hit at the Sandpiper, a center of Fire Island's night life. He took the same principle keep the beat going so the dancers keep dancing into the recording studio, and made a series of danceable remixes and re-edits.

His discovery seems obvious now: he realized that the thumping, dance-floor-friendly soul records of the early 70's would sound that much better, and thumpinger, if he made them longer. (Apparently brevity isn't the soul of soul.) He can claim to have invented the 12-inch single, although he stumbled upon the format by mistake: an engineer had run out of 7-inch vinyl.

"A Tom Moulton Mix" gathers 16 tracks, starting with "Keep On Truckin' (Part 1)," the 1973 hit by Eddie Kendricks, the former Temptation. The song lasts eight minutes on Kendricks's self-titled album; a radio edit whittled it down to three and a half. But Mr. Moulton went in the other direction: the version here lasts more than 11 minutes, and if anything it ends too soon. When that glorious beat thundering drums, squelchy guitar, a string section darting in and out finally gives way to the timpani heartbeat that serves as a coda, you may be expecting, or even hoping, that the song will come roaring back to life one more time.

Many of his mixes seem relatively unobtrusive, especially compared with the radical disco producers who emerged in the mid-70's. Walter Gibbons and Shep Pettibone, for example, took Mr. Moulton's approach further: they loved to turn songs into wild, weird, drum-driven experiments. But part of the joy in this compilation is the gentleness of Mr. Moulton's approach; he's invisible, unless you're paying attention. Whether he's toying with B.T. Express's "Peace Pipe" or extending the sublime novelty hit "Moonboots," by Orlando Riva Sound, Mr. Moulton makes mixes that hint at what came before and what would come after. You can hear soul songs morphing into machine music.

In the 70's, "disco" evolved from a place into a genre, and in the 80's, house and techno producers focused even more intently on rhythm tracks. It sometimes seems that dance-music producers are doing their best to finish what Mr. Moulton and others started: stripping away the songs until almost nothing's left.

Maybe the job is just about done. Certainly, some of the best electronic dance music these days is also some of the sparsest. In Germany and elsewhere, producers and D.J.'s have figured out ways to evoke disco's propulsion by using little more than hums and clicks and snippets and squiggles. It's just an extension of the Moulton doctrine: a relatively simple track, slowly mutating over 5 or 10 or even (in an age of CD's and laptops) 30 minutes, can drive dancers crazy.

Erik Moller, the Swede who records as Unai, is often counted as one of the minimalists; he's known for subtle, twitchy tracks that occasionally hint at dub reggae. "A Love Moderne," his second full-length CD, is to be released in America next month, and it's a slight departure. There are more melodies, more singing (his own), more songs. His fans will probably claim that this is his pop album, but beware: Unai fans probably have a different definition of pop than you do. (That's why they're Unai fans.)

Make no mistake: this is ghostly, sometimes eerie music. Mr. Moller is clearly still obsessed with subtle electronic textures and smudgy bass lines that could almost be computer glitches. And yet he has filled this album with strong, melancholy melodies, and unlike most of his contemporaries, he doesn't embarrass himself when he tries to sing. He often hides behind electronic filters; it's as if he recorded his voice and then erased it, leaving only a trace behind.

One track, "Heart Is to the Left," is about as close as Unai gets to a swaggering disco track. There's a sharp, unrelenting beat and an old-fashioned love lyric: "Truly I believe in you," he sings, although his voice soon disappears into the mix. And in "Modern Love," the music transforms itself through sudden cuts and gradual fades; it's a woozy composition made of gauzy synthesizers, wobbly beats, muscular bass lines, half-decayed backing vocals.

There's something pleasantly perverse about what Mr. Moller is doing: after years of making skeletal dance music, he's adding flesh to the bones he so carefully stripped. But not too much the whole trick, in fact, is to make these skinny songs sound fleshier than they are. Whether they mean to or not, producers like him are heading back toward the disco mixes of the 1970's, only from the other side. Once it was a thrill to hear pop songs turning into electronic tracks. But it can be just as much fun to hear the process in reverse.
BIO

Thomas began DJing as a teenager in the eighties along-side friend and collaborator DJ Harvey at 'Tonka Hi-FI'.

In '91 he moved to California and helped to form the 'Wicked Crew' which helped to define the West Coast club sound; a powerfull influence on America's club scene for years to come.

In '96 he relocated to New York and formed 'A.R.E. Weapons': a
Science-Fiction Punk Rock band that ushered in the Electro Clash movement.

After being 'discovered' by Jarvis Cocker they signed to Rough Trade
Records in London and cut chart hits and an album. Unable to keep still in the scene he helped create, he returned to NY and to DJing and formed 'Rub n Tug' with partner Eric D. The Rub n Tug parties and it's off-shoot Campfire are now somewhat legendary around the world. Under this handle the boys have done remixes for such heavy-hitters as The Beastie Boys, Coldplay and Roxy Music as well as more underground acts as !!! and LCD Soundsystem. Rub n Tug have brought something new back to disco; as I-D Magazine put it : ' In their hands the disco ball has regained consciousness . . . '.

As well as all this, Thomas has started a label in New York called 'Whatever We Want Records' with partner Carlos Arias, a band with DJ Harvey called 'Map Of Africa' that has an LP coming out in July and a Electronic Rockabilly outfit with San Francisco party darling Rene Peraz called 'Bobbie Marie'.He also may or may not be responsible for the 'Otter Man Empire' re- edit series.

The Apollo of house music

The Apollo of house music
Boom Boom Room turns fifteen with a bang

Melissa Lane

A Google search for Boom Boom Room will turn up as many results for the renowned Chicago house night as it will for John Lee Hooker's legendary jazz and blues club in San Francisco. Fittingly, they are both considered bona fide institutions of their genres. This week, our Boom Boom Room turns fifteen, making it the longest-running weekly in the country, possibly the world.

In 1992, one very gay promoter by the name Hi-Fi Bangalore was asked by the general manager of the now-defunct Red Dog to start a Monday night there. In the then-just-starting-to-gentrify area of Wicker Park, thus began the night that would launch untold number of careers, become a staple in Chicago's precarious house scene and garner recognition the world over.

The weekly's slogan now proudly claims that "The heart of house is beating strong." And the figures bear it out: a thousand fans stream through the door on an average night, 1,500 on peak nights.

While BBR can defend its reputation based on sheer numbers (both in years and weekly attendees), stalwarts explain the cultural phenomenon as a testament to the power of Chicago house. Arman Razavi, one of the co-promoters, says: "Many groups of us who have been in the scene are proud of what we do on a personal level. I mean, I believe in what I do, I love what I do, I love the house genre, I love the people who listen to it... there's a message in that music that, to me, other genres don't deliver."

When pushed to answer what that message is, he pauses for a minute and rewinds before answering: "Because it was created in the late seventies/early eighties by gay and black artists, it's mostly about love, about acceptance, and about equality."

DJ Lego remembers doing guest spots at the underground weekly less than a year after it opened. He explains that it was a small, mostly gay crowd back then, ranging from thirty to seventy-five people. But every single one of them would be dancing, as he says "just going off to the music, feelin' it and doing their thing. I'd never really seen anything like it."

Shortly thereafter happenstance landed him a residency, and the then-20-year-old Lego started coaxing his friends to come in. "It was tough, `cause they were homophobic, but when they got a taste of that music, it was like, they were cured! I mean you had your run-ins from time to time, but you just say no, thank you, I'm straight, and then you're dancing again. To this very day they are still going there." And to this day, the night's crowd remains an eclectic mix of gay and straight.

But where the night had an open-arms policy of welcoming people, it conducted a merciless court on the music. Lego recalls how Hi-Fi would castigate the DJs: "I don't like what you're playing--get off!" Sometimes he would pull every last DJ off, simply saying "No, no, no, no! Deeper, can't you play deeper?!" Lego continues, "Keoki was there. He played two records. They pulled him off. Hi-Fi said `This is not that vibe. This is not what this night is about. I'm sorry. Good night.' " Lego laughs, "He didn't care who you were. He did not care."

A few years after Boom Boom Room started, Hi-Fi took off for New York, leaving the night to run itself on autopilot until the equally flamboyant Byrd Bardot took over. As the years came and went, so did a whole parade of aspiring house artists. Among many, singers Donna Blakely and Dajae would test material there before releasing it. Dajae performed her seminal house songs "Brighter Days" and "You Got Me Up" for the first time at BBR. The way Lego puts it, "If you were gonna be anybody in the house-music industry, you had to perform at the BBR first. It was like The Apollo of house music. And if these people weren't feelin' you, they would let you know."

In 2003, when Red Dog closed its doors, Boom Boom Room went homeless. But it took less than a year to resurrect the night at Green Dolphin Street, which is owned and managed by the same people as the old Red Dog. Co-partners Arman Razavi of Music 101 and Joey Swanson of Chicago's Q101-Sonic Boom reopened the night in May of 2004.

Razavi is now planning the first official Boom Boom Room CD and a subsequent tour. But he is not looking to gut the night by flying out one of the DJs and slapping the BBR name on it. "We want people to experience the night the way it goes down in Chicago. House represents Chicago and people here are finally starting to own that and take pride in it. The music speaks to people here, they get it. We want other people to feel that, too."

The 15th Anniversary Party features Byron Stingily singing live, DJs Frankie Feliciano, Stacy Kidd, Lego, Michael Serafini, JustJoey, Uncle Milty and guest host Byrd Bardot at Green Dolphin Street, 2200 North Ashland, (773)395-0066 on March 20 from 9:30pm-4am. Hosted bar 9:30-10:30pm. $5 cover without RSVP to music-101.com.

Dance goes digital in 'House Music Project'

Dance goes digital in 'House Music Project'

Lois Weinblatt, Office of the Arts
March 15, 2006

"House Music Project," an interactive, improvisational performance developed by Associate Professor Thomas DeFrantz and opening this weekend at MIT, combines digital technology and African-American dance to explore what DeFrantz calls "the technological shifts that pushed black music into the electronic age."

"Disco, the black music of economic uplift, racial assimilation and 'good times,' gave way to two main strands of electronic music: house and hip-hop," explained DeFrantz, whose research centers on African-American performance. "House" music, which mixed prerecorded pieces together and added the voices of singers, the DJ, and often live organ, opened up new possibilities for black music, he said, but has been passed over in many histories of popular music in the United States.

Unlike hip-hop, which DeFrantz said "voiced the trials of living young and oppressed through break dancing, graffiti, emceeing and DJ-ing," house music "focused on the aesthetics of sonic pleasure through the craft of the DJ."

DeFrantz will be joined by MIT student dancers, including some from Imobilare, MIT's break dancing group.

DeFrantz will wear a "custom-constructed sensor-driven wireless body-pack" that allows him to manipulate audio and video feeds drawn from a music archive. "It takes a while for the audience to understand that the dancer controls the sound and video, but when that realization happens, it's great fun," he said.

For the technological elements of the project, DeFrantz tapped the talents of two former students who studied under him during their undergraduate years at MIT. Eto Otitigbe (S.B. 1999) and James Tolbert (S.B. 2005) were enlisted to work on the project in its early stages and provided input that DeFrantz called "critical to shaping the larger interests of the work."

Otitigbe, now known professionally as Eto Oro, designed a mixed media archive of house music documentation through images, text streams, recorded sounds and prepared video.

Tolbert created a computer engine that generates images and sounds based on the movements of the dancers as they perform within an abstract "house" on stage.

DeFrantz developed the project during Independent Activities Period, when he spent a month at the University of Texas in Dallas working with students and local community members to bring his idea to life.

While emergent technologies are integral to DeFrantz's pieces, he said there are still many challenges associated with using them in performance. "Often technology is its own end, providing spectacle without integral connection to human interaction. My goal in these works is to yoke the technology to narrative storytelling in some way," he said.

"House Music Project" will be performed March 17 and 18 at 8 p.m. and March 19 at 2 p.m. in Kresge Little Theater. Tickets are $10, $6 for students.

A discussion of "House Music Project" and a free technology demo will be held March 17, at 2 p.m. in Kresge Little Theater.

A version of this article appeared in MIT Tech Talk on March 15, 2006
